Kortihale nasal spray

Description

Fluticasone propionate treats a range of inflammatory and allergic conditions:

• Nasal Spray/Drops (kortihale):
• Treats symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (hay fever, allergies to dust, mold, or pets).
• Manages nonallergic rhinitis symptoms.
• Treats small growths (polyps) inside the nose.

How It Works

Fluticasone propionate works by acting as a highly selective agonist at the glucocorticoid receptor. It inhibits multiple cell types and mediators involved in inflammation (such as histamine, cytokines, and leukotrienes), thereby reducing swelling, irritation, and associated symptoms in the affected area.

Common Side Effects

Side effects vary by the form of administration:

• Nasal/Inhaled: Headache, sore/irritated throat, nosebleeds (epistaxis), nasal burning/irritation, coughing, and oral thrush (candidiasis). Rinsing the mouth with water after using an inhaler can help prevent oral thrush.
• Topical: Skin irritation (burning, itching), dryness, or skin thinning with prolonged use.

Important Precautions

• Consult a Doctor: Always follow a doctor's instructions or the product label, and use the lowest effective dose to control symptoms.
• Do not use for acute symptoms: The inhaler form is for maintenance treatment and will not stop an asthma attack that has already started. A fast-acting (rescue) inhaler should be used for acute symptoms.
• Drug Interactions: Fluticasone propionate interacts with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors like ritonavir and ketoconazole, which can significantly increase systemic exposure to the corticosteroid and the risk of serious side effects like Cushing's syndrome and adrenal suppression.
• Long-term Use: Prolonged use, especially at high doses, may increase the risk of systemic effects such as adrenal suppression, reduced bone mineral density, cataracts, and glaucoma.
•  Pediatrics: Long-term use in children should be monitored by a doctor as it may slow growth velocity.
